Stack overflow in Symantec products
ImageA vulnerability has been detected in many Symantec antivirus utilities caused by a stack overflow which corresponds to a kind of remote attack. There has not yet detected the existence of any exploit which makes use of this error. Symantec has also updated the signature data base of its products with the purpose Of identifying the potential threat of same exploit potentially dangerous.

The line of products Norton does not present any vulnerability in any of its solutions. The stack is the memory space reserved to store return e-mail addresses when running every program and information related to the execution of programs.


Up to the present, the company which manufactures antivirus has no provided any solution to this problem. The affected tools are:

Symantec Client Security 3.1
Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 10.1
(The previous versions may also have this problem)

The stack can be overwritten as a consequence of an overflowing buffer in specified components of the antivirus. An attack could take advantage of this to compromise the security of the system.
