Tips for uric acid

One of the most common conditions related to uric acid is chronic gout; this affection involves mainly bones and joints. The implementation of pharmacological agents is essential in the diet applied in the treatment of this condition.

One of the main keys for patient’s improvement is the elimination of purines, these are closely connected to uric acid, when the level of purines is low, uric acid presents a low level, too.

You must also regulate and reduce the consumption of viscera, meet, blue fish, shellfish and vegetables. The ingestion of this kind of food must be limited to once a week.

Alcohol is totally restricted.

The patient must not ingest great amount of greasy food, considering this stimulate the formation of kidney stones. 

Complex carbohydrates must be increased in the diet.

If the diet is a cereal-based diet, this will be very beneficial, as starch contributes to urates elimination.

The patient must drink 2 1/2 liters of water per day and also ingest bicarbonate water to alkalize urine; this is achieved by the administration of bicarbonate or citrate.

As we mentioned above, food must be purine-free, that’s why you should choose:

Milk and low fat dairy.

Eggs: Up to 5 per week (if patient does not present hypercholesterolemia).

Cereal, pasta, potatoes.

Vegetables and Fruits, except the ones with purines.

Patients should moderate the consumption of sugar, honey, jams, etc.

Among beneficial diet ingredients, we can find coffee, tea, cocoa and chocolate.

You should use vegetal margarine and oil as row spices, preferably after the cooking, to control the administrated amount.

Feeding, generally, must be balanced and diverse. If patient suffers from overweight or obesity, diet should be planned in a more balanced and low calories way.
